I stopped by the Apple store in Temecula California a evening before a friends wedding and spotted the #ExoLens kit. I have been looking for a lens kit for my phone ever since I have had two iterations of the OlioClip lens kit for the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s. For $129 with a 3x telephoto the kit peaked my interest.
That is the last good thing about the lens kit.
The case is nice machined aircraft grade alluminum metal, the finish feels great, nice and secure. Near the area where the lens connects to the case is a small threaded obtrusion which has a hole in the middle. This is where the iPhone lens sees out of into the attached lens.
Upon my playing with it for a good 15 minutes, I was never able to get the lens and the whole to line up which produced some terrible out of focus and hazing all around the edges.
The telephoto lens did “zoom” in your image but what you got in terms of focus and chromatic aberration, totally muted any benefit. The green and magenta fraying along every edge was atrocious. If you were to use this lens exclusively with the iPhone Photo app and never edit the images it is utterly terrible. If you use it with the intention of using Lightroom, Photoshop or other professional software to clean up the image, this kit may be usable. I returned mine the next day.
One other note, upon opening and playing around with the kit I noticed that the Fellowes logo was on the box. If I had seen that logo I may have reconsidered purchasing it in the first place. High grad optics and a office supply manufacturer dont sound synomonyous to me.
Wide angle lens shot of myself.
